Ironman Classic!

chuck fishWith an official IHRA “Ironman” awaiting each winner, four racers posted impressive wins as Skyview Drags presented its inaugural “Ironman Classic” Saturday, Aug. 21. The IHRA “Ironman” is the official trophy that is awarded to winners at all IHRA National Events and only at selected “Ironman” races at IHRA sanctioned tracks.

In Super Pro,  Chuck Fish, Ithaca, took home a $1,200 winner’s  check when runner-up Mark Earnest, Bloomsburg, lit the red light for an automatic loss. Fish, who dialed a 4.81, just eased through with full knowledge of the Earnest miscue, tripping the timers at 6.63 at only 65.96 MPH with a .553 reaction. Scott Popple, Canastota, was the lone semi-finalist.

Pro racing found Jason Hemingway taking the $1,000 win in his Albany-based  entry.  Racing against current Pro class standout Ray Thurston IV from Towanda, Hemingway  posted a winning .513 reaction time versus Thurston’s  later .542, and then coupled a 6.40 on a 6.39 at 105.11 to turn back Thurston’s right on 6.28 on a 6.28 at 106.93 in his Tony DiRose owned Mustang powered by a small block Chevy. Steve Cross turned in a great performance in his Friendsville, Pa., based Chevy Camaro for the semi-final money.

In Bike/Sled, Randy Teed, who always seems to rise to the occasion in the bigger racers, rode his Friendsville based racing sled to a big win over Horsehead’s Rick Woodruff.  Teed took his win on the starting line with a .589 reaction to Woodruffs “off the mark”  1.086 effort. Teed then went 5.95 on a 5.85 at 101.76 to easily defeat Woodruff’s troubled 6.34 on a on a 5.60 at 117.68. Semi-final bragging rights were earned by Brent Garcia, Cincinnatus, on his Buell bike.

Matt Petersen, Spencer, continues to flex his muscle in Street Eliminator as he again drove his Buick Regal to the win. Petersen met familiar foe Rick Simon Jr., Vestal,  in the final in a battle of the GM versus Ford Mustang. Petersen was an automatic winner as Simon bulbed away his chances. Semifinalists were Gino Mangino, Binghamton, in his blue Chevy Nova and Kirsty Roeffs, Unadilla, in her “Consign It” orange Chevy Camaro.

In Junior Dragster, Ashley Denmark, Ovid, nabbed the “Ironman” in a battle with Ontario, Canada’s Mike Reynolds. In a close race, Denmark got the win light as she went 8.41 on an 8.37 at 73.38 with a .556 reaction against a very game 8.04 on a 7.99 at 80.66 with a .549 light. Amelia Scofield, Spencer, and matt Forbes, Esperence, were the semi-finalists
