Forbes, Thurston IV and Thompson post wins at Skyview Drags
Richie Forbes, Ray Thurston IV and Dave Thompson scored big wins in Super Pr, Pro and Street eliminators as beautiful weather greeted race teams and fans at Skyview Drags second week of racing on Saturday, May 15.
Forbes, from Esperance, drove his Forbes Automotive rear engine big block Chevy dragster to the win in a heads-up final round against fellow big block dragster campaigner CJ Drake, from Binghamton. With both drivers dialing a 4.64, Forbes was just a hair quicker off the line with a .506 light (.500 perfect) to Drake’s game 5.14. Winning numbers were 4.66 at 147.63 to Drake’s right there 4.67 at 142.40. Semi-final honors went to Bob O’Malley in his beautiful Vega from Mt. Upton and Rick Simon Sr., Endicott, in his Chevy powered “Black Jack” dragster.
Pro class racing found Ray Thurston IV, Towanda, facing off against fellow nemesis and defending Pro Champion Shane Garinger, New Albany. Garinger, in his MOPAR Dodge 402, has edged out Thurston IV for the title for two consecutive years, last year by just one point. Garinger gave it his all in the final, but his .001 off .4999 red-lightmade the run a giveaway, as Thurston IV charged to the win in wheels up manner with a .513 light and a lifting 6.53 on a 6.24 at 86 mph. Garinger made his day even worse when he received his time card, as he ran right on his dial at 6.73 at 100.36. Semi final honors went to Larry Ward, Trumansburg, and Arron Brown, Odessa.
Street Eliminator found Owego’s Dave Thompson drive his full-size LT1 powered Buick Lesabre to a win over the always tough Kathy Lapcevich, also of Owego, in her Pontiac Grand Prix GTX. In yet another heads-up final, both drivers dialed an 8.22 and Thompson took the win light on a better light, .530 to a .710 as both went 8.25 elapsed times. The semi-finalist was Gary French.
The Bike/Sled found defending champion and opening day winner Brent Garcia, Cincinnatus, line up on his Buell Cyclone motorcycle against the racing Sled of Chad Wilcox, West Edmeston. Wilcox took the win as his .532 light offset Garcia’s .599 and he drove to a come from behind win at 6.38 at 104.13 on a 6.33 to Garcia’s second best 6.89 run out on a 6.90. Semi final money went to Rich Reome on his Polaris sled out of Blodgett Hills.
In Junior Dragster, defending champion Amelia Scofield, Spencer, took the win over Ashley Denmark, Ovid, in an all female final. Scofield ran a 9.22 on a 9.15 at 69.33 with a .571 light to defeat Denmark’s 8.45 on an 8.30 at 70.09 with a better .512 reaction. Matt Forbes and James Forbes, Esperance, of the Forbes racing family, took semi-final honors.
TCR racing found a repeat winner as Christian Taylor, Endicott, drove his yellow Mustang to his second win of the year with a run of 12.92 on a 12.88 at 52.92 with an .866 reaction to defeat Newark Valley’s Teresa Kurtz, who drove her Pontiac Grand Am to runner-up honors with an 11.21 on an 11.12 with a .956 at 63.39. Jacob Lyons was the semi-finalist.
The Trophy Class found New York’s Matt Petersen taking his Buick Regal to the winner’s circle with a run of 8.35 on an 8.33 to defeat the second best efforts of Shannon Fenton, who ran an 8.73 on an 8.60 for the runner-up honors. Kristy Roefs was the semi-finalist.
Racing at Skyview Drags resumes this Saturday with gates opening at 9 a.m., Junior Dragster time trials at 11 a.m. and Summit 660/Interstate Auto time trails beginning approximately 1 p.m. following the Junior final round.
